Based in Ecuador’s Zamora Chinchipe province, the APOESAE cooperative unites small-scale Shuar and Saraguro communities to cultivate heirloom Nacional cacao within traditional, sustainable forest gardens. Since 2018, their active participation in a “deforestation-free” project ensures that their premium, organically processed beans actively protect the Amazon rainforest while securing fair prices for the community.

The Yantzaza’s Rainfrog
(Pristimantis yantzaza)
The Yantzaza Frog is a typical species of the Zamora Chinchipe region. It acts as a
kind of symbol, as it is very pretty, yet fragile at the same time. Like the rainforest.
This very small brown frog has a bright reddish belly, a bluish iris, and a broad
horizontal dark red band. It lives in the ever-green mountain forest and is usually
active at night.
