### The Palmchat (Dulus dominicus)

The palmchat is a remarkable feathered resident of the lush rainforests of Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic. This sleek bird possesses an unexpected sweet tooth and plays a vital role in local cacao ecosystems. Drawn to the ripe cacao fruits, palmchats feast on the sweet, fleshy pulp, inadvertently swallowing the large cacao seeds hidden within. After journeying through the bird’s digestive system, these seeds are expelled far from the parent tree, naturally planting and dispersing new cacao growth throughout the rainforest. It is a beautiful, delicious example of a mutually beneficial relationship between bird and bean.
